Piece Description

Description by Cibelle Cavalli Bastos: “Much is talked about freedom; we see the word freedom everywhere. As motivational memes are sent around in WhatsApp family groups, words such as freedom, hope and peace, lose their meaning. Featured amongst infantilized and non-threatening graphics they are assimilated and forwarded awash with fake news. To have freedom one must work on oneself to gain freedom of mind, awareness, to have agency and finally, be free. Because now, more than ever, freedom is not free. This work is a reminder.”

Here Bastos reframes the Freedom slogan to present a “freedom is not free” timely appraisal.

Artist Bio

Mx. Cibelle Cavalli Bastos (b. 1978, São Paulo, Brazil) Non-binary, They/Them pronouns. Artist, musician, independent researcher and activist. Lives and works between Berlin, São Paulo and London.

Bastos's practice engages with the changing conceptualization of identity, performativity, pictorial communication and the propagation of behavioural patterns in the digital age. It observes the challenges to perception and cognition under a cis-hetero-normative patriarchal psyche turbo powered by platform capitalism, and explores how counter-discourses that challenge dominant narratives around sociopolitical issues can be embedded or used as a form of resistance against the propagation of algorithmic behaviour. Striving for subjective consistency, rather than formal consistency, all works occur on the intersection of purpose, occasion, and site specificity expressed interdisciplinary research through performance related work, immersive installations, AR/VR/XR, lectures, workshops, musical and text based work, as well as individual formally resolute pieces.
